Fall Seeding Guidelines

Autumn is the perfect time to seed your bare patches or refresh your lawn. Follow these steps to re-seed your lawn in the fall and by the following spring, you'll have beautiful, new grass.

Before We Seed:

  1. Make sure to have the lawn scalped a day or two before seeding date….(For best seeding results scalp at one inch or lower and make sure to bag the clippings)
  2. Mark any irrigation sprinkler heads, valve boxes, invisible fences, or any other objects that are along the soil surface with flags…(if buried 3in or deeper no need to flag)
  3. If it’s been dry make sure to water a few days before seeding….(good soil moisture is critical for the verticutter to cut the seed down into the soil)

After We Seed:

WATERING

WEEK 1: Water up to three times a day or as needed (2-3 inches of water should be enough for the first week to keep the soil wet. The goal here is to not let the soil dry out).

WEEK 2: Cut back watering to twice a day or as needed (1-2 inches should be enough. Again the goal here is to keep the soil from drying out).

WEEK 3: Water every other day or as needed (don’t let the soil dry out!! Lack of water is the #1 reason baby grass dies).

WEEK 4: Cutting back to once a week usually is OK as we head into the fall.  You still want to make sure that you don’t let the soil dry out.

NOTE: WATER ON WARM DAYS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS IF ITS BEEN DRY

MOWING

  1. KEEP OFF the newly seeded areas for the first two weeks. (This includes pets)
  2. It's OK to mow by the third week. Mow weekly for the rest of the growing season. This helps promote lateral growth and pushes the new grass to fill in. Bag clippings only if you are leaving excess grass on the lawn.
  3. VERY important to keep the leaves off the lawn as they start to fall.  If leaves start to pile up between weekly mowings, use a leaf blower to fluff them till you can get the leaves mowed up.  Leaves kept on the lawn for several days WILL KILL the baby grass!!!
  4. The final mowing of the year should be around Thanksgiving.
